Mike Atkinson grew up in rural northern Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Stout and 1994. Being an avid outdoorsman and camper, it was natural for Mike and his wife Anita to move to Montana in 1995, where he owned and operated a construction company until 2006.
Through an act of God’s grace and a little bit of luck Mike went to work for the KOA home office in Billings in July 2006. Mike’s tenure at KOA saw him work as the facilities development manager for company-owned properties, the director of lodging, and the senior business development consultant. While working for KOA Mike also sat on the Board of Directors for Beartooth Mountain Christian Camp and the Park Model committee for the RVIA. After 9 1/2 years with KOA Mike and Anita decided to move their family to the Black Hills of South Dakota to run one of KOAs largest campgrounds for Recreational Adventures Company. This three-year stint drove Mike deep into KOA campground operations, facilities, marketing, human resources, retail and guest service.
In 2017 a longtime friend and mentor presented the opportunity for Mike to go to work for the premier bank in the camping industry. Mike and his family moved to Havre Montana in early 2018 where Mike is a lending officer, campground specialist, and KOA relationship liaison for Independence Bank.
Mike’s passion for the camping industry has driven him to care deeply about Campground owners, Campground managers and the beliefs that they hold dear. One of these beliefs is that helping other people is a human value that is to be acted upon often.
At the age of 12 Mike watched his brother die from glioblastoma, his brother was 17.
This horrible disease has the ability to tear lives and families apart and Care Camps has the ability to cement families together. This is a passion that he lives every day.
